The Challenge
Roche AV Pro were recently approached with a unique and highly specific request, to install a standard university teaching room AV system into an active strength and conditioning gym. The project required not only the ability to support academic teaching and live demonstrations but also to deliver high-quality, distributed audio suitable for a physically dynamic and acoustically challenging environment. The final solution had to be both functional and seamlessly integrated into the gym's daily operation, without compromising on audio performance or ease of use.
The primary challenge was to blend the typical features of a university teaching environment such as reliable audio-visual presentation and multiple input sources, with the acoustic demands of a large gym space. The audio system needed to provide clarity at varying volume levels, support low-end performance for music playback during workouts, and remain discreet within the space’s physical layout. Additionally, the control system had to be intuitive, flexible, and automated for users ranging from academic staff to fitness instructors.
The Solution
Roche AV Pro worked alongside audio partner Leisuretec & key brand Martin Audio to address the acoustic complexity of the space. EASE Focus simulation software was used to design an audio system tailored to the gym’s layout and sound reflection characteristics.
The main gym area was equipped with six Martin Audio CDD5 loudspeakers, offering wide dispersion and even coverage throughout the space. A ceiling-mounted Martin Audio SX210 subwoofer was included to extend the system's low-frequency response, adding the depth and power required for music playback during gym sessions. These were managed by a Martin Audio DX0.4 system controller, responsible for EQ and level management, while a Martin Audio VIA2004 amplifier provided the necessary headroom and system reliability.
In addition to the gym-wide audio, two further Martin Audio CDD5 speakers were installed to support the teaching and presentation system, which is centered around the main display. This AV system supports multiple input options, including HDMI, 3.5mm hard-wired audio, and Bluetooth, giving users the flexibility to present or stream content from a variety of sources.
The entire system is fully automated and built around Crestron control and switching, with a 7” touch panel paired to a Crestron control processor. A Crestron presentation switcher and HDMI extension receivers ensure seamless video routing from multiple sources, while AirMedia wireless presentation allows content to be shared without cables. Sharp / NEC were utilised for the main 86” interactive display and 65” secondary display.
For connectivity and flexibility, the system includes input plates for hard-wired sources and a Denon professional Bluetooth receiver for quick, cable-free audio streaming. A TOP-TEC / Dalen Rubi lectern with integrated rack space houses the core kit. This provides a streamlined user interface for easy operation, allowing staff to control both the teaching and gym audio systems with minimal training.
The system can operate in multiple configurations, the presentation system can function independently, the gym audio can be used standalone, or both systems can be linked for unified operation when needed.
The Result
The result is a highly flexible, professional-grade AV system that not only meets the pedagogical needs of the university but also enhances the functionality and atmosphere of the gym environment. The solution delivers a well-balanced audio experience with excellent coverage, intuitive control, and aesthetic integration into the space. It stands as a strong example of how thoughtful design and engineering can bridge the gap between academic and athletic facility requirements.
