Project

Three new teaching blocks. One seamless hybrid learning experience. Roche AV Pro equipped NEUPC member Sheffield Hallam University with Sony BRAVIA displays, Logitech conferencing and Crestron control to create a flexible, sustainable AV solution for the future.

The Client

Sheffield Hallam University, one of the UK’s largest and most forward-thinking institutions, undertook a transformative AV upgrade across three newly constructed teaching blocks Redmires, Strines, and Langsett. The goal at the City Campus was to create a hybrid-ready, future-proof learning environment that reflects the university’s deep-rooted commitment to innovation, accessibility, and sustainability. This project stands proudly within a university community of around 32,000 students, supported by 4,200 staff, and connected to 330,000 alumni across the globeβ€”a testament to the university’s international presence and influence.

Awarded Gold in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework, Sheffield Hallam University is nationally recognized for delivering outstanding student outcomes, including one of the highest rates of graduates entering highly skilled employment or further study. By pairing cutting-edge AV technologiesβ€”featuring Sony BRAVIA displays, Logitech hybrid conferencing, and Crestron controlβ€”with this powerful institutional mission, the AV upgrade furthers Sheffield Hallam’s vision to be the world’s leading applied university, transforming lives through excellence in teaching, innovation, and real-world impact.

The Solution

Roche AV Pro delivered a comprehensive AV solution centred around Sony, Logitech, and Crestron, supported by the likes of TOP-TEC, Extron, Sennheiser, and Audio-Technica. At the heart of the installation are 226 Sony BRAVIA 4K Professional Displays. These displays were selected for their exceptional image quality, versatile mounting options, and seamless integration with Sony’s BRAVIA Signage Free (BSF) software, which enables automatic playback of high-quality content via USB. The displays also support TEOS for room control and scheduling, and include Sony’s Eco Dashboard to help monitor and reduce energy usage. Importantly, the displays are partly produced using SORPLAS, Sony’s flame-retardant recycled plastic, significantly reducing virgin plastic usage and supporting Sheffield Hallam University’s sustainability goals.

Overview

To support the university’s hybrid teaching model, Roche AV Pro installed 178 Logitech cameras, including MeetUp and Rally Bar units. These cameras are strategically placed to capture lectures, enable remote participation, and integrate seamlessly with the university’s digital platforms. MeetUp units are paired with 43" and 55" Sony displays in smaller rooms, while Rally Bars feature prominently in larger seminar and meeting spaces, offering wide-angle coverage and AI-enhanced framing. Crestron systems form the backbone of AV control across the estate. MPC3-201 touch panels provide intuitive room control, AirMedia AM-3100-WF receivers enable wireless presentation and content sharing, and Saros SR6T-B-T speakers deliver high-quality audio in seminar rooms. Crestron’s scalable architecture ensures consistent user experience across all rooms, with seamless switching between instructor and student content. Supporting infrastructure includes custom AV furniture and lecterns from TOP-TEC, tailored for each block and confirmed via detailed elevations and quotations. Extron ShareLink and signal routing devices support content distribution and AV-over-IP infrastructure. Audio capture is enhanced by Sennheiser and Audio-Technica microphones, ensuring clarity for lecture recording and remote teaching.

The Result

The teaching transformation at Sheffield Hallam University has delivered a cohesive, high-performance learning environment that meets the demands of modern education. The integration of Sony’s visual clarity, Logitech’s hybrid capabilities, and Crestron’s control infrastructure has created a seamless experience for students and faculty alike. This project stands as a benchmark for AV excellence in higher education, demonstrating how strategic integration of leading technologies can elevate the learning experience while supporting accessibility and pedagogical innovation.
