Project Snapshot

Client: Southampton Solent University

Overview: As an approved AV integrator for SUPC members, Roche AV was invited to tender for the supply and installation of nine AV presentation systems at Southampton Solent University. Following evaluation, Roche was awarded the contract based on best overall value and quality. Although a change in building contractor delayed the project award, Roche worked closely with the University to deliver within the original September term deadline. A dedicated team—including a Project Manager, in-house installation engineers, and a control system programmer—implemented a phased delivery plan. This included off-site cabinet integration and testing at Roche’s West Yorkshire office, first fix cabling, second fix hardware installation, and final on-site system commissioning. Off-site preparation proved especially valuable, allowing full testing before delivery, reducing time on site, and minimising commissioning risk.

The project involved the refurbishment of nine teaching spaces within the Reginald Mitchell Building. Six rooms featured dual Epson projectors—one paired with a SMART Board interactive whiteboard and the other with a conventional projection screen—while the remaining three rooms used a single short-throw Epson projector with a widescreen SMART Board. Each space was equipped with Extron touchscreen control panels, processors, amplifiers, mixers, and speakers, integrated with the University’s existing GlobalViewer system. Extron’s energy-efficient amplifiers also supported the University’s sustainability goals by automatically powering down when not in use.

Custom JM lecterns were wrapped in a white finish featuring the University’s logo as a bold vinyl overlay, adding a distinctive visual identity to each room. The result is a set of intuitive, modern teaching spaces that combine functionality, sustainability, and style.

“I have good peace of mind that even though the install is now finished, Roche will continue to provide good after-sales support if required. I have to say that this proved to be our best year as far as classroom installs went—and it could so easily have been the worst given the earlier circumstances.”
Ian Taylor, Classroom Technology Support Analyst
