Project
As part of the new Ellen Wilkinson commons located in the Ellen Wilkinson building at the University of Manchester, there was a need to develop a bespoke collaboration deskβ¦

The Client
The University of Manchester is a world-leading institution based in the heart of Manchester, United Kingdom. The university supports a vibrant community of over 44,000 students and around 12,800 staff, including a global network of more than 550,000 alumni from nearly 190 countries. The universityβs teaching and research activities are anchored in the city-centre Oxford Road and Sackville Street precincts, giving it the advantages of a unified campus environment within a major urban setting. With some of the UKβs largest student cohorts and extensive facilities across its residential and academic campuses, the University stands out for its scale, reach and innovative ambition.
The Requirement
Boardroom with a desk for up to 8 people connected through video conference screen/camera & sound bar.
The desk needs to be robust and reliable, it will be in daily use.
Charging and device management capabilities must be accessible for those sat around the desk.
A 65β display will be utilised, the preference would be for it to be built into/connected to the desk.

The Hive desk
We worked closely with Loxit to develop a bespoke configuration of the Hive 8 collaboration desk, tailored specifically to the clientβs technical and ergonomic requirements. The standard desk design was adapted to incorporate a range of integrated AV features, ensuring a seamless blend of technology and workspace functionality.
The configuration included custom apertures to accommodate the Extron control panel, as well as integrated power and charging options, providing both USB-A and USB-C connectivity for usersβ convenience. The desk structure itself was redesigned to house a display screen and video bar, ensuring the technology was neatly integrated rather than surface-mounted or intrusive.
Consideration was given to the ergonomics and sightlines of all meeting participants. The modified layout ensures that those seated closest to the screen can work comfortably without obstructing visibility or access for others seated around the desk. This attention to detail resulted in a design that promotes both collaboration and usability, supporting inclusive participation for all attendees.
Throughout the process, Loxit produced technical line drawings and 3D renders to visualise the proposed configuration. These visuals allowed the client to review and approve every detail before production commenced, ensuring full confidence in the final design solution.
