The Client

The University of Sunderland delivers a wide range of events and activities for students, visitors and the wider university community.

Effective communication plays an important role in these events, from promoting key messages and information to creating an engaging and professional environment for those attending.

With traditional printed pull-up banners regularly used across the university, the marketing team began looking for a more flexible and impactful digital alternative.

The Problem

Printed pull-up banners provided a simple way to display event messaging, but the university wanted to create greater visual impact while reducing the need to continually order new banners for different events.

The team needed a solution that could make better use of existing spaces and allow content to be changed quickly to suit different audiences, events and locations.

Sustainability was another important consideration. Moving away from single-purpose printed materials offered an opportunity to reduce the production, delivery and eventual disposal associated with regularly replacing traditional event signage.

  • "...greater impact"

“Having used pull-up printed banners for events across the university, I had been searching for a solution that would create greater impact while eliminating the need to continually order new banners and to optimise our existing spaces.”

The Solution

The University of Sunderland selected Olympus LED digital posters, providing a versatile way to deliver vibrant static and video content while giving the marketing team much greater flexibility over how and where displays are used.

Each poster features a 500 mm × 2,000 mm LED display area, combining a 1.95 mm pixel pitch, 800–1,000 cd/m² brightness, 8,000:1 contrast ratio, 7,680 Hz refresh rate and wide 160° viewing angles to deliver bright, clear content that can attract attention across busy university environments.

However, one of the biggest advantages for Sunderland is the system's flexibility.

Each unit can operate independently as a digital poster or multiple units can be seamlessly connected to create a much larger LED display. Up to eight posters can be joined, allowing the university to create a screen measuring up to 2 m × 4 m when required.

The cabinet edges open to allow the posters to connect, while adjustable feet help achieve a seamless finish when several units are used together. Only one poster requires a mains power supply, with additional displays connected through a daisy-chain arrangement.

The posters can also fold through 180 degrees to create a double-sided display, while their mobile design allows them to be moved between locations rather than being restricted to a fixed installation. Protective covers and flight cases further support transportation and storage.

Content Management made simple

Ease of use was particularly important for the university.

Content can be uploaded and managed through an intuitive app using a laptop, smartphone or tablet, allowing the team to quickly update messaging and switch between different static and video content.

This proved particularly valuable for Sunderland, with staff quickly becoming confident managing the displays without requiring specialist technical expertise.

  • "...assembled in just a few minutes"

“What impressed me is their flexibility. The posters can be used as stand-alone displays, but they can also be ‘bolted together’ to create one large LED screen. Even better, the system can be assembled in just a few minutes by any member of staff. They are incredibly easy to use, require no technical expertise and are essentially plug-and-play.”

The Outcome

The digital posters have given the University of Sunderland a more flexible and engaging way to communicate at events.

Rather than producing new printed graphics for different requirements, the university can now update and repurpose digital content, combining static messaging and video to suit the event, audience and location.

That flexibility extends beyond the content itself. Individual posters can be deployed where required, configured as double-sided displays or brought together to create a larger LED screen, allowing the university to get more from the same investment across different applications (the photos below show a variety of configurations - 1, 3 and 4 posters).

The move to digital posters also supports the university's sustainability objectives by reducing its reliance on printed pull-up banners. The displays themselves incorporate power-saving technology stated to reduce energy consumption by 40% compared with standard LED displays.

  • 'the impact for visitors has been fantastic'

“We have been extremely impressed with our new digital posters. Not only are they incredibly easy to use, but the impact they have created for our visitors and students has been fantastic… They have given us a much more flexible, engaging and sustainable way to promote our events and share key information and content, and we would certainly recommend them.”
